  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers crews perform annual maintenance cleaning of the large locks at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard on Friday, November 18, 2022. The 55-foot deep chamber is drained of water so workers can scrape barnacles and perform  other tasks. The large locks will be closed for maintenance from November 8-24th however the small lock remains open for vessels less than 120 feet in length and 26 feet in width. The annual maintenance is important to keep the 105-year-old Chittenden Locks safe and operational for years to come.

  • Caitlin Hamilton, age 24, gives her dog Hanai, a 17 month-old Boxer, a big kiss on the sidewalk on University Avenue in Seattle, Wash.  Hamilton has been living on the street for eight years. She found Hanai on Craig's List when she was in Montana. A seven month old puppy at the time, he had a dislocated shoulder, a fractured elbow, and atrophied leg on his left side which she later had amputated.  Veterinary clinic, Companion Pet, performed the $1,200 surgery free of charge.  Hanai is certified as an emotional support animal for Hamilton who was brutally assaulted four years ago.
